Puff-Puff (Nigerian Fried Dough Balls)

Puff-Puff is one of the most popular Nigerian sweets. It is deep-fried dough, soft inside and slightly crispy outside. It is sold on the street and also made at home for gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 250 g all-purpose flour
  • 50 g sugar
  • 1 tsp dry yeast
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 250 ml warm water
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, yeast and salt.
  2. Add warm water slowly while mixing.
  3. Stir until smooth, thick batter forms (not dry dough, more like thick pancake batter).
  4. Cover bowl with cloth and let rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes until doubled in size.
  5. Heat oil in a deep pot over medium heat.
  6. Scoop small portions of batter with a spoon and drop gently into hot oil.
  7. Fry 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown.
  8. Remove and drain on paper towel.
