Obleas con Arequipe (Colombian Wafer Sandwich with Caramel)

Obleas con Arequipe (Colombian Wafer Sandwich with Caramel)

Obleas con Arequipe is one of the most popular street desserts in Colombia. They are sold in parks, city squares and near schools across the country. The dessert consists of two thin, crisp wafer sheets filled with arequipe, which is Colombian milk caramel similar to dulce de leche. Some vendors add jam or condensed milk, but the classic version with only arequipe is the most traditional. It is assembled fresh and served immediately to keep the wafers crisp.

Ingredients

  • 8 large round wafer sheets (obleas wafers)
  • 250 g arequipe (dulce de leche – milk caramel spread)
  • 2 tbsp strawberry jam (optional but common)
  • 2 tbsp sweetened condensed milk (optional topping)

Typical serving style

  • Lightly pressed and cut in halves
  • Served wrapped in paper like street food

Instructions

  1. Place one wafer sheet on a flat surface.
  2. Spread 2-3 tablespoons of arequipe evenly across the surface.
  3. If using, add a thin layer of strawberry jam.
  4. Drizzle a small amount of condensed milk on top.
  5. Cover with a second wafer sheet.
  6. Press gently so the filling spreads evenly to the edges.
  7. Repeat with the remaining wafers.
  8. Serve immediately to keep the wafers crisp.

SpinThatCuisine Tip 💡

Do not overload the filling. Too much arequipe will soften the wafers and make them break quickly.
